The word ABORTION brings a visceral reaction for most people. Many are in support and many are in opposition, but most people have an opinion, and a fairly strong one typically. Such is the history and undoubtedly the foreseeable future of this concept, one that was catapulted back to front page news a year ago today with the June 24, 2022 decision of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the 50-year old Roe v Wade decision.
In future posts, I will attempt to explore the arguments on both sides of the debate, including the often-overlooked history of Dr Bernard Nathanson. I will also share my personal experience of meeting Dr Henry Mortgentaler.
For now, please consider this: when did you resolve a personal opinion on abortion? How did you come to this conclusion? Is your opinion fixed or open to potentially changing?
Why does this question of abortion even matter? Why is it said to be one of the most contentious issues in the 2024 U.S. elections?
Rights.
Individual Rights. "Rights of reproductive health care" vs "Rights to life."
How we as a society deal with big questions of great ethical import determines how history will judge us. Are we prepared to cast our vote as individuals in this societal quest?
